Burkes Restaurant and Bar, Yonkers, NY

Great neighborhood Irish Pub Sports Bar

Burkes in Yonkers on Bronx River Road has been a community mainstay for over 60 years.  Opened in 1959 by John Burke, an Irish immigrant Burkes has been serving up Irish and American favorites that make it a great place to go for a bite and a cold beer.

You know, like some poppers and a Miller Lite.  Keeping it Lite as I’ve got a drive, but the bar is well stocked with plenty to choose from.

And would ya just take a look at that bar!  It’s gorgeous.  Rivaled maybe by the bar at Valhalla Crossing, but gorgeous nonetheless.

I struck up a conversation with a fella about the woodwork. Nice people here at Burke’s.

Burke’s calls itself a “sports bar” but it is really much more.  There are plenty of nights and afternoons with live music.  Burke’s holds fundraisers and participates in many community events. This is really a great neighborhood bar with a bit of an old-world, classic public house feel to it.  Do come for the games though.  The crowd can get large and noisy rooting for the home teams.  Just what the fan wants!

Oh yeah, Burke’s is also home to the “World Famouns Build Your Own Burger!” Burger fans rejoice!

On my relatively short stop this time, I had some poppers.  I prefer the cheddar variety, but these were cream cheese.  Tasty though.  I also like them a bit spicier but that’s hit-and-miss for poppers. A burger next time for sure.

The menu otherwise features your standard pub favorites with some traditional Irish options and some steak and seafood options as well.

There are usually specials that include cocktails. And of course, the beer menu.  That’s a pretty decent selection of drafts.

Burkes is a great local Irish pub and a lot more. If you want to really experience it, come for a NY team playoff game.  There’s plenty of room.  Street parking can at times be a challenge, but if you have to park a couple of blocks away, it’s worth it.  You may want to walk it off a bit anyway after celebrating your team’s victory!

Pros

  • Traditional Irish Fare
  • Plenty of beers to choose from
  • Super friendly neighborhood joint

Cons

  • Parking may be a challenge
