Captain Lawrence Brewery, Elmsford, NY
Brewery with a bit of everything
If you’re a Westchester beer drinker, you’ve likely had and definitely seen Captain Lawrence on tap or in cans at your local spot. This is a brewery that I first visited with my dad when they had free sample hours and were located in Pleasantville with a bar that didn’t hold more than 10 people. That was about 15-16 years ago. Well, times have changed.
The Captain Lawrence Brewery has become a destination. A place to bring your family on Sunday and enjoy their spacious indoor dining area or when it’s warmer, take in some rays, play some cornhole in their large outdoor Biergarten.
Pics of the Biergarten will come when it’s nice out, I promise!
On this Sunday afternoon, I grabbed a table and plopped myself in front of my laptop to get a little work done. From their extensive menu of beers, my first choice was Shaleileigh Red. A terrific amber red which I ended taking home a crowler of to enjoy more at home.
I also grabbed a personal pizza with sausage and hot honey. Beer=excellent. Pizza, so-so. The pizza was ready within minutes but the bottom was kind of limp. I prefer a crispier crust. The sausage was ground where I prefer it crumbled and chunky. It is a brewery, after all, not a pizza shop.
I followed up my Red with an Amber. So very, very good.
The brewery is actually also a distillery. They make small batch bourbon, vodka, and gin branded under the name of Current Spirits. I had to give the whiskey a try and was not disappointed. It was on the sweet side, smooth and went down nice and easy. I thought about getting a bottle but at $75, I’ll make it a gift to myself when this website is making me money!
Captain Lawrence is a big place with two full-size bars. They have two beer hall/dining rooms, and for larger community events, parties, weddings, etc., they open up the brewery floor to be a totally creative party room. What a great place to hold an event!
Here’s the other bar which wasn’t opened on this day. Also, a picture of the brewery where yeast does its magic!
On weekends there are usually musical performances as they had a two-man group this day. Parents were chatting, kids were clapping, and everyone was having a genuinely great time. This is a great Sunday afternoon place to hang. There are also trivia nights and happy hours. Captain Lawrence is highly recommended!
