Elmsford

Elmsford has a rich history dating back to the early settlement of the region. It was originally inhabited by the Native American Weckquaesgeek tribe, who were part of the larger Algonquian-speaking population in the area. European settlers, mainly from the Netherlands and England, began arriving in the 17th century.

The village was initially called “Storm’s Bridge,” named after the Dutch settler Wolfert Ecker (or Acker), who built a bridge over the Saw Mill River around 1700. The area surrounding the bridge became known as “Ecker’s Ford,” which evolved into “Elmsford” over time. The village was incorporated in 1910.
