Soul Brewing Co., Pleasantville, NY
Craft beer at its local bar best
Just kind of doing errands on this chilly Friday afternoon and popped into Soul Brewing Company. I hadn’t been there since the Summer and as you can see, it isn’t Summer anymore.
The decor is a little bit nicer than many other brewery/pubs with this being more of a friendly, nice bar as the prioirty over the brewery. Often you’re sitting within arms reach of the brewry but at Soul, there is separation. The look is industrial with hightop tables and regular wooden tables. There was some decent reggae on but music is at the bar’s discretion aka, no jukebox.
Not a lot has changed on the inside except for the beer menu which is always welcome at a brewpub. Sure they have their standards such as “Empire Ale” which is a great American Pale Ale. Golden and crisp with a nice finish. Most of the beer menu has changed though.
I was happy to see that “Monk’s Dream” was still available as I really enjoy a good Belgian. I skipped it today in favor of the “Oktoberfest” assuming that wouldn’t be around much longer and I hope the Monk’s Dream is. I was driving so having three pints just wasn’t in the cards today. Hard to say if the Oktoberfest was a touch flat or if that’s just their brew. I prefer a little more bubbly than what I had. It was tasty though. The beers I had were $8 each.
The bar and entire place are immaculate, including the bathrooms. Granted it wasn’t very busy at 4:00 on a Friday but it was picking up a little bit towards the end of my visit.
It was good to see they were adding some fun and activity to the place with trivia, yoga, and music! Yoga and milk stout… seems like a perfect combination. Downward Drunk anyone?
Soul publishes its calendar of upcoming events right on its homepage.
Wheeler Ave. in Pleasantville can get pretty busy on warmer nights so street parking can be a challenge on occasion. There are parking lots in the area but be prepared to walk a block. On this chilly afternoon I got a spot right accross the street.
Soul used to have a little bit more of a menu but not much and that seems gone for now as well. There are restaurants, deli’s and pizza options up and down the street so don’t worry about going hungry.
Pros
- Excellent small batch craft brews
- Industrial feel but modern and bar forward
- Clean bathrooms
- Activity schedule posted
Cons
- No food
- Street parking challenges on busy nights

Review Summary: Great craft beer in a brewery that made a real effort to be a great bar and not just a brewery that set up a bar as an afterthought.
