Great Beer Selection and Music!

Ron Balcks on Mamaroneck Ave, White Plains

I’m a huge fan of open mic’s and a musician myself.  I’ve performed at Ron Blacks, and it’s just about time that I reviewed the place.

Ron Blacks Restaurant and Bar in White Plains is an absolute gem! I’ve been going there for years and have never been disappointed. The staff is friendly, the atmosphere is inviting, and the food is always delicious. They also have a great selection of craft beers that are rotated out regularly.  There is paid parking in the lot in the back, and you can enter from the back of the restaurant.  Street parking is usually hard to come by, and even the lot can fill up on busy nights.

Ron Blacks is a large restaurant and also has outdoor seating in the warmer months.  The place is large enough to book a party in their main room and not be bothered by other patrons.

The menu features everything from burgers and wings to full dinners.  You’re sure to find something good.

On this visit, I ordered the “Almost Good For U BLT,” which is a BLT with avocado and goat cheese.  Maybe a bit much cheese for me, but this was a pretty tasty version of a BLT.  There are a bunch of side options, but I’m a fan of steak fries, and they had potato wedges which were great.  I guess the sandwich would have been even more “Good For U” without them but hey..

The Bar at Ron Blacks

The bar is a large wrap-around with what you would think is plenty of stools, but it can get busy.  There are probably about 25 seats at this long U-shaped wrap-around bar and plenty of drink options.  They usually have some drink specials but the real feature is the great beer selection.  There are at least 40 taps and bottle and can options as well. You’ll find all of the regular mass-produced options as well as craft beer from far and near. It is a “Beer Hall” after all.  There is a dedicated beer menu for the asking but the attentive servers will likely put it in front of you before you ask.  The bar also features screens all around, and they’ll switch the channels for you.  They’re not the biggest screens, and I wouldn’t call this a sports bar, but they’ve got the games on.

Wednesday Night Open Mic

I didn’t get on stage on this visit but simply enjoyed the house band which features Gil Paris.  Gil is an amazing Grammy-nominated Westchester local guitarist and just a great guy. He’s patient when working with the open mic sign-ups and really just wants to see everyone have a great time and enjoy some great music.  On this night, as always on Wednesday open mic nights, the band was smoking.  They played some jazz/blues standards, pop tunes that they transform to be in a bit of a more jazz style.
